Welcome to the Tombs: The Walking Dead Finale Review

You should know this by now but if you don't this post contains full episode spoilers,  please enjoy at your own risk.

---

A lot of people have asked me how I felt about this episode as I have been outspoken in my distaste for Andrea on the show. I honestly have to say that she is one of my favorite characters in the comic - until recently, as she's been kind of relegated to the background and has had nothing interesting to do or say so they've paired her with Rick. I dont have a problem with the relationship, Lori was unfaithful and she has been dead for quite a while in the comics, I just think at this point she's not being fully utilized. Regardless, I loved this episode, it surprised me.

The episode opens on a first person view of The Governor punching at the camera and making disparaging remarks while doing so, really making it feel like The Governor is kicking our collective asses. The camera pulls out to show its not Andrea he's giving the business to but Milton, who doesn't look like he knows how to take a punch. The Gov let's him know he knows he torched the walkers in the hole, and he ain't happy. Govvy gives Milt the option to make it up to him though and hands him a pretty big blade.

He leads poor bloody Milton to Andrea's kennel and tells Milt he can come out when Andrea is dead. Milton wheels on the Governor to stab him but is too slow and nerdy. The Gov catches the blade easily and spins Milton into a wall and shanks him - prison style - repeatedly, leaving him to bleed out in front of Andrea. Milton will now turn, and as a zombie will likely snack on the handcuffed and helpless and poorly implemented Andrea. The Governor was right about one thing: Milton won't be leaving without killing Andrea, he just won't be alive himself.

The Gov loads up his attack force without a second thought given to Andrea or Milton, and apparently the rest of the town. Tyrese has no inclination to head off and fight Rick's group and offers to stay and protect the women and children staying behind. Without this offer the town would've been defenseless during the attack on the prison. Great leadership there Phillip, (Governor's real name).

The Woodbury folks show up at the prison with a literal bang, launching rockets and grenades into the guard towers and storm in. The Governor leads the charge in and they clear room by room slowly realizing Rick's group vammed the moose a while ago. As this realization sets in, in a confined hallway tear gas grenades land among the Woodburians' feet forcing them to run out of the prison for air, where they are fired upon by riot geared Maggie and Glenn. The Woodbury folks run back to their vehicles for safety where they find the rocket and grenade launchers as well as the mounted machine guns have all been disabled. They do the smart thing and high tail it out, leaving an asthmatic kid behind.

The kid makes his way into the forest around the prison and happens upon the prison groups women and children guarded by an armed Carl. The kid surrenders and Carl wastes him anyway. I really love Carl and so far I am excited to see that he's pretty much the only character on pace with his comic book counter part.

We catch up with the Gov who is enraged that his people ran. He has drives ahead of the lead car and screeches to a halt. Everyone unloads from their vehicles and he asks them what the hell they're doing running away. The lady who has been most opposed to the militia this whole time deems the attack a massacre (despite none of their people dying at the prison, as far as she's aware anyway) and gets other people to walk away with her to head back to Woodbury. The Gov has had enough of whiney villagers and opens fire on the townsfolk killing all but his two loyal henchmen, the large black guy, "Bowman", and the kinda weasely Martinez. The Gov walks out into the field of bodies and finishes off a few stragglers and we see the whiney lady alive and using a dead body to hide under, the sole survivor of an unwilling army.

Rick assembles his troops at the prison and surveys any damage done. Hershel tattles to Rick that Carl is a little badass and killed a dude. Rick checks with Carl who claims the kid was pointing a gun and Hershel tells Rick that it was cold blood, that the kid was surrendering. (Still following? Sorry for the he said she said bit there.)

Rick suddenly wants to be seen as a concerned father and interviews Carl as to why he's so awesome. Carl lays it out straight. Every time they let someone live, someone else dies. Back in season 2 Carl left a zombie alive and it killed Dale. They let the Gov run around and he killed Merle and Axel. Not to mention one of the prisoners they let live in the first half of season 3 that used zombies as weapons and it led to T-Dog (miss you dawg) and Lori (no big loss) getting dead. Carl is a stone killer, and with good reason. God, I love that kid.

Rick ends his bid for father of the year by choosing (again) to do nothing with Carl, and gathers Daryl and Michonne to head to Woodbury and finish things. When they arrive they're fired upon and fire back at Tyrese and his sister guarding the gates. Rick yells out he's coming out and not gonna fire. Daryl clearly doesn't like not firing but silently follows, as does Michonne. They have a quick conversation and its revealed that Andrea left and was headed for the prison and Rick lets loose she never arrived. Since Rick sprung Glen and Maggie he knows just where to look for prisoners and they quickly locate Andrea.

Andrea, who appears to be incapable of multitasking and therefore unable to attempt to free herself and talk to the dying Milton, has got herself bit by the zombified Milton. I guess if you like Andrea this is sad. For me I'm so indifferent to her now that I don't give a shit and her tear filled moment with Michonne was lost on me. Yet again Andrea elects to kill herself (see season 1 episode 6). If only Dale hadn't been so stubborn we could've not had any Andrea the last 2 seasons and the viewers/humanity would've been the better for it. This "sacrifice" leading to Andrea's death, lead to no one at the prison dying during the Governor kerfuffle, which believe you me, in the comics was nowhere near as bloodless.

We see the prison a short while later with a bus pulling up, in it along with Rick are Tyrese and his sister, are all the people from Woodbury that were left behind. I like Rick, I understand his motivations and I love The Walking Dead, but here's where I differ in a zombie apocalypse situation. Rick is now taking in all the people too weak/old/sick/young to be deemed able to defend themselves by the asshole Governor who forced an asthmatic kid and 70 year old woman with arthritis to fight. I hate to put a value on human life, but how worthless are these people in the zombie apocolypse?

Yep. That's how season 3 ends. Not with a bang but with a whimper. The Governor has high tailed it and Rick has more than tripled his people. Had Rick not shown up the people at Woodbury would have been left to fend for themselves with only Tyrese to defend them.  Well the action was great but the end was not everything it could have been. Season three had much more action than season 2 but season 2's ending was far and away better.

Best Character: Carl. Every time he's got screen time I can stop my self from saying, "He's the one that should've been named little ass kicker."

Best Kill: Well, the only kills aside from Carl are the Governor's, and he's a team killin' asshole, who woulda been kicked if he was to play CoD or Halo. That being said, he's stone cold and Rick shoulda killed him when he had the chance.

Well that's it for The Walking Dead, I'll be picking up the show again in October but I may run a review of the blu-ray when it drops in August.

Let me know what you thought of the season finale in the comments below.

Prey and This Sorrowful Life: A Walking Dead Two-Fer

You should know this by now but if you don't this post contains full episode spoilers,  please enjoy at your own risk.

---

I have to be honest to myself first and foremost, and then second I have to honest to my readership. I didn't initially want to review or talk about the episode before last, Prey.

To me it was the worst episode of this season, and not just because I don't like the handling of Andrea's character (which can only be explained as "fucking mishandled") but because it was such a filler episode. Prey had no character development and no change in the status quo for the characters involved. However I will have a brief synopsis and my favorite moments. Since it will be short I am including the next episode as well and include headers to tell the difference.

Prey

We start the episode in Woodbury with Milton sharing with Andrea The Governor's secret: he plans to slaughter the prison group if and when they show up to trade Michonne for their safety. Milton also shows Andrea the torture chamber Govvy has prepared for Michonne's return. Andrea decides to return to the prison to warn the group. At this point with all her dumbass decisions I'm not sure that after delivering the message that she wouldn't return to Woodbury again.

Andrea's story kind of stalls out as she hops the wall in front of Tyrese and his sister and goes on foot to see the group. Ultimately after some decidedly creepy cat and mouse hunting of her by The Governor, he recaptures her just outside the prison gates, and good old "sees-dead-people Rick" catches a potential sight of her for a brief second before she's tackled by The Governor and Rick dismisses it as lingering crazy.

The episode ends with Andrea tied to the torture chair. My wife turned to me and said at this moment "I feel like if this had been a character I gave a shit about this episode would've been super tense."

Exactly baby. Exactly.

There is a bit of a side story with Tyrese and his people and their reaction to Andrea running and Tyrese's group telling him to report her and to stop making waves and get in line with Woodbury's rules. Tyrese is taken along with his group to "prep" for the attack on the prison people. This preparation consists of stopping by a large hole in the ground that is being used as a pit to trap/hold zombies and Tyrese objects to use the zombies as a weapon toward the other survivors. This causes a fight with his people again and stirs shit with The Gov.

These zombies are eventually torched, burned alive (undead?) by Milton. A fact the governor has figured out, but hasn't acted on. . . Yet.

Favorite Kill: Gov chops up a Zombie head with a shovel. Disgusting, but great.

Character of the Episode: Tyrese. He don't take no shit.

Favorite Line: Wasn't words, Governors whistle while hunting Andrea, so haunting, great stuff.

This Sorrowful Life AKA AMC makes you feel sorry for a one handed racist asshole

I gotta get this outta the way first: it feels like this episode moved backwards and not in a good way. In the episode: Arrow in the Doorpost, Rick tells Hershel he knows that the offer to give up Michonne is a blatant trap, but this episode opens with Rick telling Daryl that he has decided to give up Michonne.

Now I'm all about letting crazy people change their minds (I mean I did marry a woman, amirite fellas?!) but it feels like the show isn't developing plot lines, it just opens with no preamble and we just have to accept it as it comes. This happened a few weeks ago when we were told mid-episode that Andrea setup the meet between Rick and The Gov but we did not see that happen during her visit to the prison. I don't like a show assuming I'm stupid and that I won't notice the fleece over my eyes.

That out of the way, I loved this episode. Perfect blend of story and zombie/human killin' action.

So, after Rick tells Daryl his decision to give up Michonne he moves on Merle. Merle sizes up Rick (correctly as it seems) as not having the stones to give Michonne over to the megalomaniacal Governor. Regardless, Merle sets the scene for the Michonne abduction advising Rick of the best way to fuck her over - using wire rather than rope so she can't chew her way free. Rick goes on the hunt.

Rick announces to everyone - but Michonne - his intentions on giving her away to The Governor to mostly disapporving looks, especially from Carl. Later Daryl goes looking for Merle and finds him downstairs. Merle seems to be hiding something but starts ripping into Daryl's lack of interest in leadership eventually driving him away. After Daryl leaves we see that Merle has been a busy little rascist and he has made a little kidnap kit. At the same time we see Rick gathering supplies and - after hallucinating a disapproving Lori - changes his mind again (bitches be tripping', right Rick?) to not harm the incredibly useful Michonne.

Merle takes it upon himself (what with not getting talked to by the flip flopping Rick) to take the hostage situation upon himslf and creates a fake zombie problem after getting Michonne alone. He goes all caveman on her, clubbing her, and after dispatching a few of the zombies, drags her away.

Rick finds Daryl first and reports his new outlook immediately to America's favorite crossbow wielding survivor. Daryl accepts the change like water off a ducks ass, just as its reported that Michonne is missing . . . and so is Merle. Daryl heads out after Merle on his own after getting a jab in on Rick about his terrible tracking skills (everyone remembers Sophia died alone in a forest because of Rick right? That happened) and everyone gets a little happy because we haven't seen a crossbow kill in a couple episodes.

Merle, the honey badger he is, apparently doesn't care about getting tracked as he's walking Michonne down a dirt road letting her lead as he's got a wire line leading from her to him, and her katana. He takes her to a hotel and ties her to a post as he starts to hotwire a car. The car's alarm starts to go off as the one handed madman works on the car, signaling a mini herd to show up. Merle stays hot wiring and let's Michonne fend for herself for a bit, which she does quite well stomping the head of one and using her wire to garrote another. Eventually Merle does jump to the rescue using her sword to cut her free. They get in the stolen (is it stealing from zombie owners?) car and speed away.

Michonne pleads her case with Merle appealing to the man he was before the zombies. Merle somewhat proudly talks about how he's killed 16 men since the outbreak. Michonne asks how many before. None. How about after the zombie but before The Gov? None. Maybe Merle isn't so bad and The Governor changes people; makes them like him. Merle lets Michonne go and gives her back her sword and let's her know he's got a mission to do.

Merle gets to a bar and finally gets that whiskey he's been wanting. He cranks the radio and draw in some zombies and leads them to where the meet between Rick and The Governor was supposed to be. Bailing out of the car Merle hits the ground running, letting the zombies pass him by, they follow the car as he heads into a warehouse. The Governor's men respond to the radio blaring from the car and find about 20 zombies or so waiting; they open fire. As they fire upon the zombies, Merle fires upon them, hurting them enough to put them down and let the zombies finish them off.

Merle finally sees The Governor and takes aim. Aas he fires, one of Tyrese's group unknowingly steps in front of the bullet saving The Governor. Merle gets attacked by a zombie coming from his blind side and while killing it he falls through a door exposing his location. The Governor lays in and kicks the shit out of him. Merle gets a hit or two in and it looks ok for a second until The Governor bites off two of Merle's fingers on the remaining hand! Merle says he'll never forfeit, so The Gov shoots Merle in the chest.

Undisclosed time passes, Daryl has tracked Merle to the meeting location were he finds a zombified Merle munching on the member of Tyrese's group he previously shot.

Daryl's heartbreaking reaction to seeing his brother is the reason I love this show and continue to watch. The human drama of The Walking Dead is amazing. Daryl realizes that he can't leave without ending his brother's existence, a problem that zombie-Merle hastens by attacking the grief stricken Daryl. During their struggle the brothers end up on the ground and Daryl repeatedly stabs Zom-Merle in the face. Daryl is alive and well and we bid adieu to his racist asshole kin.

Favorite Kill: Definitely zombie-Merle with a close second to the kills that Live-Merle got in his rampage against The Governors men. Also close third to Michonne's bound hands kills. Man she's a bad ass.

Character of the Episode: Daryl. How can I not put him up here? He had to kill his older brother. Stone cold man.

See you here again shortly for the finale review.

Walking Dead: Arrow in the Doorpost

You should know this by now but if you don't this post contains full episode spoilers,  please enjoy at your own risk.

---

Whoo boy! Another talkie episode.

The Ricktator and The Governor are about to throw down in this apocalypse's largest grimace-off ever. Rick's people - Hershel and Daryl - roll up on a building looking all suspicious and case the joint. Rick cowboys-up and enters the darkened building and approaches a table that is already setup in the center of the floor. As Rick waits, The Governor stalks out of the darkness towards him. Rick draws and The Governor amicably takes off his gun belt and hangs it on a post. It's time to talk.

The Governor's people show up outside and start another pissing contest with Rick's people, to see who can intimidate the others the most. Andrea shows up late to the party, surprised the meet is going down without her. She rushes in and stands there as Rick explains how he and his people want to be left alone. The Governor immediately shoots this down with a laugh. Rick wheels on Andrea, clearly the info she provided of a "kind and patient governor" was off a bit. During this discussion it's mentioned that Rick knows what kind of person The Governor is, (what with floating heads and what he did to Maggie). Andrea didn't know about Maggie.

Andrea tries to assert some modicum of power and The Governor explains to her and Rick that she really has no power to discuss or setup any agreements and actually she can leave as she is not needed. She turns to Rick who also let's her know he has no use for her and that he was planning on being only 1 of 2 people in the room anyway.

Nobody loves you Andrea, neener neener, go die in a fire.

Outside Daryl and Martinez (one of The Governor's main guys) have a zombie kill contest, that as far as I'm concerned was won by Daryl considering he killed more, got a sweet knife throw kill, and got the prize at the end: a half pack of smokes. Meanwhile there's a meeting of the minds with Hershel and Milton going over the science of the walkers, and Hershel losing the leg to save him from a zombie bite. Milton goes so far as to ask to see the stump, Hershel does not oblige.

When Andrea emerges from the barnish type building Hershel excuses himself (excuses himself in the middle of a zombie apocalypse - he's still fucking polite!) from the conversation and goes to talk to Andrea. Andrea asks what her "boyfriend" did to Maggie. After a long look Hershel just says, "The Goverenor is a bad man" and leaves it at that.

Back inside Rick and the Governor are at a stand still as Rick (thankfully) refuses to submit to the will of The Governor. The Governor even whips out some whiskey and a sob story about his dead wife and the life he had before. Boo fucking hoo man, you had heads in aquariums, you know who does that? Hannibal Lecter, that's who, you sick bastard. The Governor eventually relents and offers to let Ricks people be if they give him Michonne. Rick says he'll think on it and The Governor gives him 2 days.

All in all nothing is solved. Both parties leave the parley and tell their people lies about what took place at the meeting of "the dead wives club" and have used the secret meeting as reasons for declaring war on the other group. Rick doesn't tell the group about the offer to give up Michonne.

Rick does meet with Hershel and tells him The Governor wants them to surrender Michonne, and he shows he's not stupid in telling Hershel that he knows if they show up to The Governors drop off, Govvys gonna kill them all. Rick tells Hershel that he's filling him in because he hopes that Hershel will talk him out of declaring war. The episode ends with Hershel saying nothing.

I've decided to add a section to my reviews/ recaps where I will give my favorite moments:

Favorite Line: "Pussy," said by Daryl in response to Martinez declining a cigarette because he prefers menthol.

Favorite Kill: Martinez pops a zombie's head like an overripe grape with a bat up against a silo.

Character of the Episode: Rick. Despite his not killing The Governor on sight, he is an unmitigated bad-ass in this episode. Nobody fucks with Rick Grimes.

Walking Dead: Clear

You should know this by now but if you don't this post contains full episode spoilers,  please enjoy at your own risk.

---

I had a hard time thinking about what to really write about for this episode. To begin, I really liked "Clear" despite it seeming like a reprieve from the tenseness that is The Governor. At the end of the last episode Rick did say Michonne and Carl would be hanging out with him on a road trip. But didn't say where.

This episode makes Atlanta and the surrounding areas in Goergia seem really close together. What with all the time spent in episodes on the road and at the farm and searching for the prison, it looked they were travelling for a long time, but now it seems like they're only an hour away from Rick's house. I can't be the only one that noticed that Rick's posse left during the day, and got to Rick's old hood while it was still light out. Everything that happens in the episode is in the same light, and they leave again all within what seems like 2 hours.

That gripe aside I was a big fan of this episode. Basically it was filler, but really good filler. It starts out like I was saying; a proposed road trip back to Rick's stomping ground to check for the guns he left in the sheriff's office, which are now gone. This leads to the group going down the central road of their once idyllic town to find the street littered with pointy things that are very clearly zombie traps. As they approach an open building they are drawn upon by a crazy person on the roof who wants them to drop their guns and walk away. They don't. The group sets up a quick plan of attack and take down the crazy guy, (well at least knock him out).

Now there was probably a great reveal planned here that the crazy guy is Morgan from season 1 episode 1, however this was ruined by the "last time on" clip at the beginning of the episode that showed scenes of the first episode with Morgan ruining the moment. Oh well.

The group carries Morgan in to his "bat-shit-crazy-cave" where the walls are covered in writing, proving something I've said before about this show and season: it's dangerous to go alone. Morgan has clearly spent a lot of time alone and doesn't even recognize Rick, the man he saved all those months ago. Morgan has set up his own arsenal here as well. Morgan attacks Rick and gets a stab in but Rick snaps him out of it and they quickly bond again. Morgan reveals that his son, Duane died at the hands of his zombie mother no less. Morgan couldn't take it upon himself to kill his zombified wife, making Duane's death his fault.

Through the writing-covered walls and the conversation with Morgan, we see and hear a recurring word: "Clear," but it's never really discussed. Rick decides to ski-daddle and leaves.

This whole time Carl and Michonne have their own little subplot which just equates to Carl risking life and limb to rescue a photo - taken from before the walkers - of their family from a restaurant, and Michonne gets an ugly art cat outta the whole deal. Win-win.

As Rick's little group leaves, they see Morgan killing his trapped zombies, piling them up and burning them. "Clearing" them. It appears Morgan's lot in life is now to clear as many zombies as he can.

I'm a bit on the fence on this. I feel like if you're safe where you are, having zombies at your gate happen to be a good deterrent for those trying to get in.

Let me know in the comments below what you thought of the episode.

Zombie Love - #DeadYourself

Because waiting for a new Walking Dead episode is always difficult, they put out a #DeadYourself app for iTunes and Facebook where you can upload pictures and see what you'd look like should you not survive the zombie apocalypse.

My wife and I were both unknowingly playing with the app at the same time.

It's moments like that when you know you're meant for each other.

Walking Dead: I Ain't a Judas

You should know this by now but if you don't this post contains full episode spoilers,  please enjoy at your own risk.

Well balls. I made a stand about not writing anything about the idiotic, vacuous, horrible decision making Andrea, and what does the show do? The make an Andrea centric episode. Shit.

Well let's get into it.

The episode starts with more group discussion on whether or not the survivors should leave the prison or stay and fight. Merle, who is now an inside dog, fills the group in on just exactly who they're dealing with. His advise had been to leave the night before but they hadn't heeded it, so in his opinion they were up a creek as the Governor is just the kind of guy to have stationed men with guns at all exits from the prison.

Rick leaves for brooding. He chills outside in a stairwell that's been fortified with wooden pallets. He's joined by Carl, his son, who is getting to be the badass he is in the comics. Carl tells his dad that with the newly returned Daryl, Rick should give up leadership and cool the hell down for a bit. Rick no likey.

Over in Woodbury we catch up with the worst character in the show, Andrea, as she has been clued in to the Gov's mission to the prison, just not the circumstances around it. Andrea hasn't just drank the Governor's Kool-aid, she swims in it. He tells her that he just went to say hi and was fired upon first. Andrea shops the idea again of visiting the folks she thinks she still knows at the prison and it's shot down. Outside the Governor's office she approaches Milton about helping her sneak out and he eventually agrees, well agrees after tattling to the Governor.

ROAD TRIP!

Andrea and Milty hit the woods and attack a walker. Stealing from Michonne's playbook, the two make a pet outta the poor guy. They tackle him and hacksaw his arms off and steal from another duo, (Marcus and Dom from the Gears of War series) and curb stomp the bastard to remove his bottom jaw.

I told you I'd talk about Andrea once she does something interesting. You had my attention Andrea, now you have my interest. After their back alley surgery the two are surprised by Tyrese and his people. Milt offers to escort them to safety, Woodbury, (you know, the place with the zombie girls and floaty heads) and they accept.

Why Tyrese?! Why do you want me to be sad. Just join Rick and let me love you!

Andrea now has her Michonne-esque pet, TO THE RICKCAVE!

Meanwhile in scary, crazy, land of the one-eyed politician, the Governor unbandages his punctured orb to show everyone at home the creamy gooey center. Fuck that's gross. Finally he puts on his hand-stitched eye-patch, he is complete!

Andrea is spotted yards away from the prison by Carl, who alerts the survivors. Andrea thinks she's gonna get a parade in her honor, boy is she wrong. The gate is pulled back just enough to yank her inside before she gets stripped of her supplies and thrown to her knees like a criminal. One thing of note in this scene: Merle exits with the group and is armed; they disarm Andrea. Makes you think.

Back in Woodbury, Tyrese's group is getting to meet good ol one-eye. During their talk, two of the idiots he travels with reveal they've been to the prison and they'd be ever so happy to take part in killing Rick and his group if given the chance. Tyrese seems skeptical of everything but does say he'd probably be able to draw out the layout of the prison, anything to be a valued member of Woodbury society.

Dammit Tyrese! I've been a solid supporter of getting you on the show and you do me dirty! Well I mean I haven't tweeted or facebooked or blogged about you but I've said it to myself that the show needs you I think. But still, damn dude, you cold.

Andrea is let in to the holding area, and says she's on a mission of peace, asking them to gentley walk into Woodbury with her and be good citizens. Rick's group doesn't like her flavor of Kool-aid, and clue her in to what really happened. Not only did the Governor shoot first but he killed Axel, a prisoner, who was a valued member of the group, unlike Andrea.

Michonne shares with Andrea away from the group that Merle was the hound released to kill her when the Governor "let" her leave. A fate Andrea would've shared had she been a better friend and not a terrible person. In the end it's male-kryptonite-Carol that tells Andrea that the best thing for everyone would be to let the Governor hit Andrea's v with his p and then calmly and nicely stab him to death. Andrea is released, given her weapons back and she returns to Woodbury.

Admitting to the Govvy that she left and saw Rick 'n pals, Andrea admits by saying she didn't want to stay that she chose to return. She fulfills the first half of Carol's plan and lets the sex happen. Naked in the moonlight she pulls a blade and holds it over the sleeping Gov (odd he sleeps in the eyepatch but whatevs) but lets him live. Credits.

What the fuck Andrea, you had him! He was right there! Eh, whatever, I hate you. Good to point out just about everyone has killed a human and tons of zombies but Andrea. She couldn't even let someone (Dale) kill themselves in the first season, or kill herself correctly for that matter, so I guess she does have a moral line. It's just between having sex with a bad guy, like a lot, and killing a breathing person apparently.

Well that's it for the episode. Kind of on the weak side for the episodes of season 3, doesn't feel like much was accomplished aside from character building. So as of right now this was my least favorite of season 3 so far.

Hit me up in the comments if I missed something or if you're an Andrea faithful and want to tell me what's so great about her.

The Walking Dead: Home

As always here is your spoiler alert: I will be giving full plot disclosure and thoughts on the episode. Read at your own risk.

---

'Home' opens with Crazy 'ol Rick being crazy.

He is working his turn as lookout up on a guard tower where he sees a mother vision of his dead wife in white regalia standing outside the prison fences among the walkers. At this point I'm not super sure what Rick's motivation was as he really does seem to understand that she's dead. I mean he knows he's not saving her from zombies, he knows its dangerous to go alone (!) but he runs out there for a talk.

It is great to see Sarah Wayne Callies' (Lori) devotion to this show even after being dead (it was actually her on the phone calling the cracking Rick in the 6th episode this season; Hounded) as she plays her imaginary self, (I was worried because last episode Lori's face was only shown in shadow).

During Rick's disappearance into the woods surrounding the prison we are treated to Glenn trying his best to make Maggie's sexual assault - at the hands of the Governor - about him; by planning with the women, children and the old-and-one-legged how to charge in to Woodbury and kill the Governor. He gets mad that no one but him sees this as a good plan and hauls off in a truck (when'd they get a truck?) to who knows where.

Rick in the mean time has found his wife and they carry on a conversation. Not really a lot happens.

Catching up with the Dixon brothers, Daryl and Merle . . .

We see them walking in the woods as Merle antagonizes his little brother. For everything Daryl says about going back to the prison, Merle has a reason to not go. During their argument Daryl (and the viewer)  hears a baby crying, screaming and yells all in espanol. Daryl runs off to help with an embittered Merle, who was left behind in a similar fashion on tense zombie fun, back in episode 2 of season 1.

The brothers Dixon come upon a bridge where two Hispanic men are on a flatbed truck surrounded by zombies, and a Hispanic lady is trapped in a sedan with a broken window and a slow crawling zombie in the back of the car. Daryl kicks the usual amount of ass with Merle using a gun once or twice in defense only of his brother. This scene has the best zombie kill so far with a zombie head being crushed with the trunk door of the sedan, brains and blood bursting like a balloon.

After the people are saved, Merle goes diving in the car looking for vittles or any type of prize he feels he earned by saving the stranded folks. Daryl pulls his beautiful crossbow on his own brother and takes control demanding Merle to exit the car and the survivors to exit the scene, baby and lives intact. After another brotherly tussle Merle rips up Daryl's shirt revealing scars up and down his back and a sick tattoo (upon first watch I thought this scene was about the tattoo and didn't see the scars) this prompts a quick tet a tet about their father and Merle. Merle left home at a young age abandoning his defenseless younger brother to take the full abuse from the Dixon patriarch. Daryl resolves to return to the prison with a great line to Merle "I may be the one walking away, but you're the one that's leavin'. Again." Great stuff.

We go back to Rick in the woods now just outside the fence. Hershel has crutched his way down to parlay with the crazy-ass sheriff, a good half football field away from the prison. Hershel pleads with Rick to return and Rick admits he is seeing his wife and he knows she's not real, but he's not ready to come inside yet. This makes him an asshole. Call it PTSD if you want but leaving women and children defenseless to be sad in the woods spells "asshole" to me.

For one reason or another the scene switches to Carol and Axel speaking about Axel's life before the zombies. Oh Axel. Seemingly from nowhere, in this sweet moment, Carol's blackwidowesque curse upon me kicks in as Axel takes a bullet to the head and dies instantly. The Governor has come to the prison and no one gets a pardon.

The Governor has an SMG of some kind and has brought 2 guys with him in a truck and another guy has already made it up to the top of a guard tower just outside the fences and he is firing down into the yard. Carol is using Axel's corpse as a shield since she was out in the open and has nowhere to hide. Carl fires back as Maggie makes it outside to return fire on tower guy and The Governor.

I don't normally root for the bad guy but The Governor in the scene is standing away from his truck, no cover, bullets whizzing past, and he's grinning, he loves it. He starts just firing into the air, not even at the other survivors as they shoot at him, making several things clear: one, that they cant touch him and two, hes got bullets to spare.

Rick and Hershel get pinned down by henchmen, and it seems to have died down. . . Just as everyone visibly takes that sigh of relief, a giant damn armored truck drives up the road to the prison and thru the gates mangling them beyond repair. The truck drops a ramp from the back and unloads a mini horde of zombies in the open grounds between Hershel and everyone else.

The Governor and his henches pack it in along with the armored truck driver and they drive off, like a silent, "Fuck you, you're so unimportant we're not even staying to see if you live." Rick and Hershel on opposite sides of the fence are trapped by zombies and Rick has run out of ammo. Though we do get to see some awesome sheriff pistolwhip action it looks like Rick is about to shuffle off his mortal coil at the hands of two hungry deadites when suddenly Daryl and Merle emerge from the woods and start fucking those zombie's shit up crossbow style.

Some of you eagle eyed readers may notice I don't have anything about Andrea in this post again this week. Well once she does something interesting, or worthy of note I will add her in, promise.

Next week we get to see how the group reacts to Merle at the prison. Hopefully, and this is because I love the comics, Tyrese comes back. The Gov dons his iconic eyepatch and Andrea might be interesting (seriously folks once she stops fucking the bad guys, like, all the time, and starts being the sharpshooter badass from the comics she's back in as worth writing about.) So far this is the best episode this season. The show continues to be a must watch.

Let me know in the comments if there was a scene you liked or if you want to see more about awesome zombie death! ASM out.

I Swear It's Not Anything Like Twilight! A Warm Bodies Review

Here's your friendly spoiler warning!  Slight spoilers ahead. No endings just some early plot points.

---

I wanted to start with a positive statement about the movie just to spur you on a little further for the review: Warm Bodies is nothing at all like Twilight.

Now I was worried when I sat down to watch and the theatre went dark - signaling to the guy two rows ahead of me to turn his phone the fuck off or to at least set it to vibrate and stop playing angry birds. He was a bit slow on the uptake and 18 minutes into the movie he finally caught on that he didn't just pay 8 dollars to rent a comfy chair, but there was indeed shit happening on the screen in front of him. I found myself feeling worried again when the new age hipster music prevalent in the Twilight movies (yes I have seen them, no I am not a woman or gay, but I am married, so I might as well be) began to play and I did sort of jokingly try to walk out when I saw the logo for the studio that foisted the Twilight saga upon us, Summit.

Warm Bodies is first and foremost a zombie movie. I know as a people we have had zombies as the lead dog of pop culture for a while now, so a "different" approach to the same thing is refreshing now and again. Warm Bodies suffers from poor advertising, so much so that it has been described to me as a different movie, each time someone has told me about it. I've heard "Twilight with zombies", a "RomZomCom" (WTF izzat?) and a "zombie love story", and none of these is really true with exception to maybe RomZomCom because that isn't a thing.

The movie opens with a zombie narrating his zombie life explaining the important facts we'll need for the story.
  • Firstly there is no recollection of your earlier life once you're a zombie, although the main character, played by Nicholas Hoult (About a Boy, X-Men:First Class) does remember that his name starts with an "R" but that's all.
  • Second, they do have relationships and conversations, which are mostly inarticulate grunts with one or two words, showcased with R's friendship with another zombie, M played by Rob Corddry (Old School, Hot Tub Time Machine.)
  • Third, there exists a subspecies to the zombie, an endgame if you will, that the zombies refer to as, "Bonies," which is a state that a zombie will get into where it gets so apathetic/bored or can't get the food to have the energy (it's not really FLESHED out in the movie, pun intended) to go on so they just start to peel their flesh away until nothing but a bones and like a primer layer. As you can imagine this makes them quite irritable and they will go after and eat anything with a pulse.
  • Lastly, R is a huge hoarder, he's picked out an airplane at the airport his group of zombies hangs out in, and he's filled it with bits and baubles, including a record collection.

The human interaction starts when a group of teens are released from their compound to search for medical supplies. The scavengers are led by the daughter of the compound leader, Julie played by Teresa Palmer (I am Number Four) and her boyfriend Perry played by Dave Franco (James Franco's Mom's womb.) The humans are set upon by R's entourage and here we learn that zombies like human's brains because as they eat them they get that human's memories, also they do it for self preservation in that if the destroy the human brain the human can't become a zombie too. We see this first hand as R kills Perry and eats the shit out of his brains. After a flashback of the dead early into the movie Perry's, R sees Julie newly defenseless and rather than feeding on her he decides to save her. He smears some goo from a gunshot he received on her face and leads her to his plane at the epicenter of the of the zombie horde.

R's heart begins to beat again and he starts to speak in full sentences the more he hangs out with Julie and he lies to her about needing to lay low in the plane for a few days, to spend time with her. Julie gets some insight into zombie non-life, and sees first hand that maybe zombies aren't so bad. There are a few throw away scenes of R learning to sort of drive and Bonies sniffing around.

Some of the better lines are given to some of the background characters with Corddry getting to drop the movie's only f-bomb. As time goes on you can see the development of each character, both as people and zombie. Granted it's built on lies and eating the brain of her boyfriend, but watching the relationship build between R and Julie is actually quite heart-warming.

There are quite a few twists along the way and much more to the story that I don't want to give away due to respect of the movie, and really a desire for others to see and enjoy it. This movie is certainly worth the money and the time, I completely recommend it.

If you get to see it or have seen it already, let me know how you feel about it!

The Walking Dead: The Suicide King

Full episode spoilers exist below!! Please do not go any further if you enjoy your ignorance of all things Walking Dead.

---

Walking Dead is finally back! We've been waiting since the last episode on the 2nd of December and it was quite the cliffhangerer they left us on. Last we saw Rick and his group (Daryl, Oscar, and Michonne) broke into Woodbury to rescue two of his group (Glenn and Maggie)  that had been kidnapped by Daryl's older and rascistyer brother Merle who's working for the governor of Woodbury, The Governor. Over the course of 8 episodes we were shown Woodbury and The Governor and what was nice and idyllic was actually super fucked up and crazy, The Governor, the worst of all killing anyone outside his town and keeping their heads, floating in aquariums, and keeping his zombified daughter gross and straight jacketed as a sort of pet.

During the rescue attempt Oscar was killed, Glenn and Maggie were freed, Michonne stabbed The Governor's eye in, and Daryl was captured during the chaos Rick's group had caused to find their missing squadmates. Last we saw Daryl, he was brought into a fighting ring alongside his brother Merle, in front of the entire population of Woodbury for a fight to the death.

See The Governor had tasked Merle with hunting down and killing Michonne, as she was a bit of a loose end, but Michonne has a katana and Michonne is good with it. She killed several of Merle's men and showed enough of her skill that though wounded Merle felt she was too much of a threat and let her go, returned to The Governor and claimed her dead. This made Michonne putting out The Governor's eye that much more of a surprise, and that brings us to the beginning of this episode, just over 2 months later, yet on the show mere seconds.

The fight itself is short lived, Rick, after making sure Glenn and Maggie are Ok, breaks back in to Woodbury to rescue Daryl and succeeds in shooting up the place as well. Daryl escapes with Rick and brings along Merle and his awesome crossbow. When everyone makes it out of Woodbury to the waiting and damaged Glenn he promptly freaks out that Rick brought along his captor and tormentor Merle. Rick quickly establishes a "No Merle" rule. Daryl retorts with a "No Merle, No Me" decree, and fucking bounces. Good thing they went through all that shit to save him right?

Rick returns with his group to the prison, where there is a new group of survivors, waiting along with half of Rick's group to hear from Rick. Rick though, Rick has other plans, he's going to go bat shit crazy and see his dead wife during a stressful first impression with the new group. He pulls his gun and starts waiving his gun screaming "You shouldn't be here," and "Get out!" Of course he's aiming this at the spectre but the new group gets the hint regardless and gets outta dodge.

Definetly a good start for the second half of season 3 (most watched episode ever with over 12 million views) there was a lot of action, I did leave out some of the episode as everything with  Andrea's character makes me sick, but it is a must watch, because they all are, and there you have it. Let me know what you thought of the episode or if you think Andrea should've just died already.

Revelation

Update: I have found that the pricing for 360 and the Wii U will be 49.99 as well and it will be day one digital download for PS3 only with the other two consoles following suit later.

Just a quick post today. It was recently announced that the amazingly good Resident Evil: Revelations that was previously released only on the 3DS will be coming to consoles, May 21st (my wife's birthday, she'll be thrilled) in the Us and the 24th in Europe. So far only the pricing for the PS3 has been announced, which is at 49.99, but it will be released for the 360 and the Wii U. Hopefully they will be improving the graphics and adding some stuff, because as of now you can buy it for 19.99 for a new copy at Gamestop for 3DS and 30 extra dollars seems steep for the privilege of playing the game on a tv with a controller. I will update as soon as the pricing is announced for the remaining 2 consoles. Let me know if you're excited to see it on console or if it was good enough as a handheld.

Lollipop Chainsaw: A test you can use to see if other people are worth talking to

This post was originally hosted at cheshirecatart by the great artist Devin Kraft. The review was originally posted back when the game was first released and I wanted to post it here now that I have my own blog.

---

The game starts with young Juliet Starling narrating to the player about how today is her birthday. She introduces us to people we'll see throughout the game; her sisters Cordelia and Rosalind, her mom (who,we are told is the reason that Juliet and her sisters wear their vaginas proudly) her dad, and her boyfriend Nick.

Juliet explains, in a series of photos and shower scenes, that her family is different from Nick's because they are zombie hunters. Nick is very early on bitten by a zombie and before he himself turns, Juliet decapitates him. With magic she is able to keep his head alive and attached to her waist band. Nick serves as comic relief (in an already comical game) and in several different situations can be used as a weapon against the zombie hordes. Her weapons, along with Nick's are upgraded by the cast of the game giving Juliet presents for her birthday.

The prologue exists mostly to introduce us to combat and the tone of the game.

The combat is simple:
  • Strong chainsaw attack
  • Pom Pom Attack (which serves to dizzy zombies for a beheading hit)
  • Low chainsaw attack which de-feets  zombies (get it?!?)
  • Dodge
Note: Beheading zombies results in rainbows and sparkles spraying from the neck stump.

As you progress thru the game you earn zombie medals in gold and platinum which you can use at the game store. Gold variety buys upgrades to either her base stats or for combo moves. Platinum medals buy costumes, in-game music and conceptual art.

The aforementioned tone is decidedly adult and at the same time juvenile but always funny. From a class mate that was rescued from a zombie horde randomly proclaiming his favorite president to be Warren G. Harding to the perverted Sensei Morikawa repeatedly falling face first into Juliet's cleavage. Although some humor is just funny without being rude or offensive, one of my favorite exchanges is in the first level between Juliet and Nick, it goes:

Juliet: I need to find Morikawa Sensei.

Nick: Who?

Juliet: Morikawa Sensei! He's my sensei.

Nick: You mean like a teacher?

Juliet: I didn't know you speak Japanese Nick!? (she then proceeds to speak in Japanese for a minute or so)

Nick: I don't know Japanese, just that one word.

Juliet: Oh Nick, your simple innocence is one of the reasons I love you! You're like a kitten. A kitten that doesn't speak Japanese!

The story does feel like it's being purposely perverse (in a very good way), like a lot of the comedic R rated movies coming out lately, it's reaching for that "hard R," or in this case a "hard M." It's in line with other Suda51 games, being unapologetically weird, with cursing and gorey fighting and has random uses of the words "dick" and "fuck" aplenty. Lollipop Chainsaw also contains one of my favorite mini games in which you drive a combine thru a field of zombies.

Leading up to the release of the game James Gunn (director of Dawn of the Dead and the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy) was brought on and his addition helps to make a zombie masterpiece.

Graphically the game isn't out to win any awards, but it serves it's purpose. Their are several mediums used in the design of the game. Most of the game is done in a third person camera style, but has comic panels for level score and menus, as well as very flat 2-D transitions in levels that look a lot like moving paper similar to South Park but not crappy. Whenever a new character is introduced we are given a bio in comic book format, that gives us attributes and a list of "Likes" (things like badminton and shooting are clumped together with things like masturbation and wanting to meet Justin Bieber and then add his skull to the person's collection).

There do seem to be controversies around the game already about it being degrading, offensive, sexist, and weird. My argument to that is, "Isn't that what makes it fun?" Which is what it really breaks down to folks. The reason we play video games is to have fun. Why should we take a game like this seriously when it clearly doesn't take it's self seriously. Yes the game is short. There is replay value and not just for achievement hunters but for the great dialogue and all the many things that you miss the first time around.

In closing I do not believe in number scoring (because numbers are arbitrary), I will only recommend that you buy this game and love it for what it is. Always pay for the things you like so that the people making them can continue to do so.

Also, do yourself a favor and turn on the subtitles, you'll be glad you did.

Weekend at Preppers: ZombiU Review

Being dissatisfied and disgruntled at the sub-par yet highly praised and completely overrated  Dishonored I decided a foray back to the Wii U was in order. I decided on ZombiU created by Ubisoft who has put out some of my favorite games, which normally get pretty decent reviews. ZombiU isn't one of those games. I was completely surprised by this as I had been following the game since E3 last year and even with a market saturated in zombie games (zombies are the new WWII of gaming) I was really stoked to play it. This was the fact so much so that I had decided that ZombiU would be a day one purchase along with the Wii U. However I started reading up on the game, as I try to do before purchasing any game, because while the responsibilities don't last as long I akin games to puppies and study a game as I would any breed before I give it a forever home I my collection,  and was amazed to see the game being blackballed by quite a few publications, e or otherwise, and was getting low scores.

ZombiU opens in a world already changed and ravaged by a virus that has infected a majority of the population and you play as a survivor against the odds. In the opening we are given an FMV that shows some of the disease's effetcson humanity both physically and psychologically. Your survivor is contacted by a voice that is coming thru speakers on a street and you see you are being watched by cameras as well. You're tasked with running to survive, this shows you some of the basics of movement and action buttons. Also, if you are slow to catch on, this shows another game mechanic, permanent death. Yes, in this survival horror game it is possible to not survive.

Assuming you live you're led, over intercom, to a safe house setup by the a man identifying himself as "Prepper." Prepper spent his past days prepping for the apocalypse following advise of a man named John Dee, who was an advisor to the queen who accurately predicted the zombie apocalypse. Prepper sets you up with a device he made called the "Prepper Pad." The Prepper Pad is a virtual stand in for the Wii U game pad. The pad shows you a map of your area, has a radar that you ping living/undead creatures to avoid zombie ass nibbles, and a scanner that you hold up to scan your area for item and infected as well. Also later the scanner is your scope for any weapons with a zoom.  The pad is essential to the game and survival, it solves riddles,  reveals hidden codes and gets updated throughout the story.

From here you become Prepper's lackey, but for the greater good of surviving. He send you to areas to gather supplies, ammo, weapons and food, and ultimately get saved. You're first mission is very basic and leads you to getting essentials for the game. You are tasked with finding the last guy Prepper tried to help who is stuck in a security window and has been zombified.  He had a handgun and a cricket bat as well as a backpack they have dubbed a B.O.B. or bug out bag that stores all the things you find to survive. This also serves to teach you how to defend yourself against zombies, which is to savagely beat them to death with a cricket bat, which comes with feelings of satisfaction as their heads pop in a bloody mess. Unfortunately, as you soon learn this is the only defenseless zombie that cannot hurt you.

The graphics do seem a bit dated, while still THIS generation,  there is some blocky textures. The colors are dulled hues, browns and grays, all but blood and explosions anyway, but who fucking cares?! It's a survival horror game the dull colors mask zombies, makes them harder to see, which serves the game well. There is tons of darkness and you have a sole rechargeable flash light that stands in the way of complete and utter blackness. You are alone, there is the voice that comes across the pad now and again of Prepper but the color and the environment really do help to help that feeling of desolation.

This game is a definite buy. It's been out just long enough that you shouldn't have to  pay the $60 price tag anymore. This game is for anyone who likes their games difficult, misses Resident Evil 1 or 2's feeling of horror, and fans of zombies. This game is completely and utterly, first and foremost, survival horror, it never forgets that so neither should you.
